Good Morning and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 12/10/2017; the deck today is *The Ancient Egyptian Tarot* by Clive Barrett, along with an accompanying eponymous book, (Aquarius Press., 1994.) It is a very pretty deck, and as far as it goes, being quite usable with normal readings. However, I don’t feel it is inspired by anything. I don’t wish to berate Mr. Barrett, but this looks & feels like commercialism was more important than Truth. Sigh, oh well . . . It is an Egyptian-themed deck, yet lags far behind the Kier or the Ibis, IMHO. It has suits and normal Court cards, BTW. A good buy if you find it in a thrift shop or at a garage sale. Onward & Upward! My draw for today is: Sulfur = XIV Temperance; Mercury = XII the Hanged Man, and Salt = the Princess of Wands. On first regard, tableau-style, it is a good and generally beneficial spread. My oldest Tarot friend, XIV Temperance, is anchoring the team today, and as always I am delighted to see her. XIV
Temperance; “. . . the Genius of the Sun holding two cups and pouring from the one into the other the liquor which holds life." (P.)--" A winged angel with the sign of the sun upon his forehead . . . pouring the essences of life from chalice to chalice." (W.) Another version has: ". . . pours the fluid of Life from a golden vase into a silver one." (P.) This is evidently the cosmic function next to the Sun, messenger of the same: Mercury or Vulcan, lord of the sphere of Virgo, surrounding the solar Leo-sphere. Other traditional descriptions confirm this: "It is the symbol of combinations, working incessantly in all regions of Nature." (P.) On his breast this angel bears a square with inscribed triangle, reminding us of the passage of the cosmological Stanzas of Dzyan, "The Three fall into the Four," which means the beginning of Manifestation. "Entry of Spirit into Matter and reaction of Matter upon Spirit." (P.) So on the subject of this card there seems to be perfect understanding. "Incarnation of Life," P. adds. This is Mercury, who has to do with the distribution of life-currents from the Sun farther on into the solar-system and from the heart and solar-plexus farther on into our physical body. The golden vase and the silver one illustrate this distribution from higher to lower regions. So this card signifies all sorts of distribution, from the nervous system and its workings of co-ordination to correspondence by the post office, letters and communications, and the latter not only limited to this physical world but extended to other planes of existence. The function of Mercury is that of the mind in its concrete activities and imparts knowledge, learning, which after all is the beginning or potentiality of all our further relations in this world.” (A. E. Thierens, “The General Book of the Tarot”.) I am a rather careless and overzealous individual; give me a passion or subject of interest and I will go WAY overboard getting it together, to the point of being unmindful of the needs of others. Bad Mark. Grin. In today’s case, however, I am being given the lead attitude in how to deal with my Anima’s current zealousness.  I have decided to undergo the rituals & training to join the (ancient) Egyptian priesthood, and to building an Adytum of my own, a moon temple to Thoth and Isis where my own magic can be carried out in safety and assuredness. This will bring me as close as possible into communion with the faith I practice, that of ancient Kemet (Egypt) which, yes, is still alive & thriving today. To put it briefly, it isn’t an elaborate costume drama for theater freaks; the Egyptian pantheon is the anthropomorphization of natural forces and energies, both cosmic and planetary, to which the Egyptians gave human form and an animal head to signify the force of nature symbolized. No one worshipped animals or animal-headed gods, believe me. They were NOT a barbaric civilization sacrificing children to Moloch; they were advanced thinkers in metaphysical cosmogony and the Energies in their various forms present in the Universe. This, I presume, explains the current attitude of my Anima, who is “whole hoggedly” diving into the premise and the promise of my anticipated course of action.
XII The Hanged Man; “This twelfth sign of house, closing the cycle of the zodiac, means loss to the outer world, solution, handing over the results of one cycle to the following one, whence comes the meaning of treachery in common astrology. This house contains the things which we have not yet mastered and those whom we have failed to understand or who have failed to understand us. So either this remains for the next cycle, or it will tempt us to waste our last forces. In the eyes of the world it is the sign of waste, spoil, mishap. Viewed from the other side it is the sign of the Golem, in which the outer world loses its importance or even reality, and the consciousness is opened to inner truth. This is the reversing of consciousness, which makes things change their significance in such a way that they appear to turn upside down: the world is now viewed from the other side. And this is the significance of the hanged man.' It is also the sign of Judas, who, as far as the outer world is able to judge, did not understand the significance of Jesus and handed Him over to His enemies, the most mysterious of the disciples and apparently the fiend within the circle. What, however, is his treason or despair when viewed from the other side? It is an act of 'perversion,' the result of human nature being too weak to carry on in this world the heavy load of spiritual revelation; or even a mystic message, which till now has never been understood and will never be understood by the profane world.” (Ibid.) She gets VERY enthusiastic about my projects, Grin. Therefore I may be called upon to rein in her horses today and bring her back down just a little; after all, it is Moderation, NOT Denial. This is a good think, EXCEPT for the fact that my Anima, once the initial enthusiasm has run its course, has very little aptitude for follow-up, which is almost exclusively the concern of my Animus, who hates leaving a mess.
Finally, we glide over to the viewing balcony to watch the mighty engine at work that powers my solar barque: the Princess of Wands. We already know that all of the Princesses are the “thrones of their respective Aces,” and one sometimes has an unclear concept of what this means. It means that the Princess empowers the manifestation of her Ace’s potential, “giving birth” to the numbered suits and its four representations of Energy, the Court cards. In this case, the Princess gives “birth” to all of the power inherent in the Ace of Wands, and if one is fond of conundrums, she births her own parent. Grin. However, our Princess isn’t all Fire & Light & Warmth; she is mercurial, as well, & can be fickle, arbitrary & capricious if offended. The Princess of Wands; “The Martian and Saturnian element on the Third house and on the Eleventh. It is very remarkable, that the first series of meanings in this case hint at the third house, while the so-called reversed meanings bear all the characteristics of the Uranian eleventh house: suddenness, surprise, etc. This element on the house of Air, Gemini and Aquarius, must, of course, denote either intellectual facts or concrete results of intelligence. The latter may be called 'proof' or 'outcome' or exact knowledge. The knowledge of facts may be the fruit of an elementary school curriculum, of journalism, of spying, etc. But it is justly indicated by tradition, that the Martian and Saturnian Gemini-man is a specialist in unlawful knowledge or in knowledge gathered at the cost of much trouble and effort; so it may be also knowledge gathered later in life, university extension. Exact intellectual results may appear as: remarks, observations, notes, etc. When put in the negative there may be investigation, examination, etc. All these are truly the effects of Gemini. There are, moreover, the personalities representing the facts. On account of the eleventh house we shall have to note the same sort of results but more or less reciprocal and sudden, whereas Uranus, lord of this house, accelerates the energy of Mars in this element but is apt to destroy the Saturnian vibrations or at least counteract them. It is quite true, therefore, that this card may represent speaking and acting without sufficient preparation and without dogmatic or very formal outlines: improvisation. Tradition was very correct in this.” (Ibid.) So, looking in general at the spread today, I see a day of excitement and energy, but it will need to be watched, controlled & measured, as just like candy, too much Light can be a bad thing when you aren’t prepared for it. I ask the Cosmos to grant us ALL the Temperance to modify any excesses we may experience today. Be Well! Be Zen. Be Blessed!!
